Part-time workers get full-time help

Acas Chief Executive John Taylor welcomed the report on the difficulties faced by part-time workers - published today by the EOC - and pledged Acas' full help and support to help employers to extend flexible working within the UK labour force.

In recent years a number of pressures have forced employers to examine the way they operate and attempt to make working practices more flexible. These pressures include: intensive international competition, the increasing pace of technological change and the need to exploit new opportunities.

John Taylor said:

"There are many advantages to employing part-time workers:

* they have higher productivity and lower absence rates than full-timers
* they can provide cover for busy periods or to extend the running of expensive capital equipment without adding full-time shifts or incurring overtime payments.

"Acas provides a range of advice to help employers and employees alike understand the issues involved in flexible working and how to introduce it into the workplace. This includes face-to-face training, advisory booklets, confidential advice through our helpline and our Equality Advisers will visit organisations to provide personalised advice on this and other aspects of equality.

"In the next two weeks we will be launching our new e-learning package 'Working Parents' which gives all the facts from maternity and paternity leave through to the right for working parents to request flexible working outlined in the recent DTI legislation."
