The 2004 Workplace Employment Relations Survey revealed that the majority of workplaces have some kind of policy on equal opportunities or managing diversity.

Many of these policies are aimed at:

• protecting employees from discrimination on the grounds of sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age
• promoting the diversity of the workforce
• responding to changing demographics and working patterns – for example, many employers use flexible working to meet customer demands and retain valuable employees with caring responsibilities.

Your equality policy reflects your commitment to equal opportunities. It is your promise to treat all employees, and potential employees, fairly and considerately. To make sure that your promise becomes a reality we recommend that you:

Review your existing equality policy and action plan – or write a new policy if you don't have one.
Monitor how the policy is working in practice – this is the critical stage in delivering equality in the workplace.
Take action, where it is needed, to address inequality or promote diversity.
