Acas statement on new proposed child bereavement leave for working parents

Friday 13 October 2017

The Government has announced today that it is supporting a Bill in Parliament that proposes to give employed parents two weeks paid leave if they lose a child under 18: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-leave-allowance-for-bereaved-parents-will-be-one-of-the-most-generous-in-the-world. Acas statement on the announcement is included below.

Acas Chair Sir Brendan Barber said:

"We welcome this announcement. The death of a child can be an extremely sad and emotional experience for any parent.

"This new proposed legal right will allow eligible working parents paid time off to help them grieve and will help employers who manage staff that are experiencing the distressing loss of a loved one.

"Acas has existing good practice guidance on managing bereavement at work and we are working on revising our advice to incorporate this new legal right."
