Getting more disabled people into work

Acas DWP roundtable All our research shows that having a job and going to work is important for our physical and mental health. But how do we get more disabled people into work and help them to thrive?

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have consulted on the Green Paper "Improving lives", which aims to transform the employment prospects for disabled people and people with long-term health conditions.

Acas held a round table event in Nottingham in January to gather views and feedback from employers, charities and unions to help shape Acas' response to the consultation.

The top findings from the day include:

  • Organisations promote wellbeing through strategies, good policies and by focussing on the individual.
  • Some barriers to wellbeing include: attitudes (culture), resources and accessibility issues.
  • Aids to recruiting disabled people include: Better access to resources, fairer application of policies and practices.

We asked some key questions at the event which created interesting discussions and are summarised in our response to the green paper. They are also available in the infographics and powerpoint slides below.

We asked:

  • How do you promote wellbeing in your organisation?
  • What are the barriers to wellbeing?

Acas' Head of Strategy, Gill Dix, wrote a blog about the event:

Asked about the greatest obstacles to getting one million more disabled people into work, it's perhaps not surprising that accessibility to buildings still gets mentioned a lot.... Read more
