Quarter of UK workers never promoted in their careers

A quarter of workers in Britain never get a promotion during their careers, and one in ten only did so after waiting for a decade or longer.

According to the research from, 23 per cent of workers failed to be promoted at any point in their career.

For some, that may not be an issue. But the research suggested that a stalling career was a common reason for changing professions.

Some 29 per cent of the 1,500 respondents said that they had switched jobs rather than waiting longer to be picked for promotion or training.

And of those who had retired in the last decade, the same proportion (29 per cent) said they had gone for a career change because they were 'stuck in a rut' or 'unhappy' with their current situation.

Retirement regrets

More than one in five retirees urged their younger counterparts to be bold about asking for a rise or promotion if they felt they deserved it. One in seven said that their biggest regret was 'not being ambitious enough' when they were working.

Employees in general said that feeling that they 'matter to the company' and having 'colleagues as friends' were top of the list among reasons for why they enjoyed their jobs.

Employers concerned about staff retention should consider the importance of creating realistic and attractive channels for career advancement, training and development.

They should also bear in mind how important it is for employees to feel valued by the company, and to foster an environment in which colleagues can bond and support each other.
