September is the preferred month for holidays
It may come as a surprise to some employers that September is the most favoured month to take annual leave, according to research from the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals. It seems that many workers like to take advantage of emptying resorts, children being back at school and low-season rates, to take a break before the weather gets too autumnal.
The study found that almost a quarter of employees surveyed preferred to go away in September, while 17 per cent chose August, with June and July both trailing on 14 per cent. Nearly half were planning to go to a beach destination, and a third said that they were taking a 'staycation' in the UK.
With all this in mind, employers should be prepared for a surge in leave requests for this period and make appropriate contingency plans. By the same token, employees may do well to anticipate the rush and try to get their leave notice in as early as possible.
