Managers need to reach out to 'Generation Y' graduate recruits

With around 230,000 graduates now joining the UK's labour force every year, it's essential for managers to connect with younger generations of employees who may have very different attitudes and aspirations.

The recent expansion of higher education in this country has meant that more graduates than ever before are entering the labour market. However, recent research has pinpointed several 'core behaviours' which can lead to a 'disconnect' between the new 'Generation Y' and their older managers. Such a breakdown could have a profound impact on graduate performance and retention in the future.

The research conducted by Ashridge Business School and the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) demonstrated a significant degree of disconnect between the motivation, aspirations and work attitudes of new graduates and their managers. Traditional hands-on management styles came in for particular criticism from graduates, who wanted more freedom and flexibility in their roles. Good communication, respect and support with career advancement ranked highest among the things graduates expected from their managers, while managers rated regular feedback and clear goals as the most important.

The findings also showed that nearly a third (32%) of graduates were dissatisfied with their boss, with over half planning to move jobs in the next two years.
