Workplace stress tops absence league
UK employers face a growing challenge in managing workplace stress as a new survey shows it to be the top cause of long-term sickness absence.
The 2011 Absence management survey report, produced by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in partnership with Simplyhealth, explores the levels, causes and costs of employee absence and looks at its impact on productivity and on the economy as a whole. The survey shows that nearly 4 in 10 employers reported an increase in absence due to stress in the last year, rising to 5 in 10 for public sector employers.
At Acas, we work with employers to develop practical solutions for dealing with stress and managing its effects on productivity, morale and absence levels. In addition to guidance on identifying, addressing and minimising stress in the workplace, Acas offer individually tailored training courses to help employers manage stress in the workplace, as well as practical training in absence management and creating an attendance culture.
