Table 1: total notifications
Early conciliation notifications can be individual or made on behalf of groups of employees. Acas received a larger number of group notifications during this period than in previous years.
April | May | June | Total | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Employee | 8,982 | 8,157 | 10,369 | 27,508 |
Employer | 245 | 169 | 324 | 738 |
Total | 9,227 | 8,326 | 10,693 | 28,246 |
More than 1,150 group notifications, covering more than 77,000 individuals, are included in the total shown in 'Table 1: employee notifications'. This means notifications between April 2020 and June 2020 covered 105,000 individuals.
Note on 'track'
Acas records indicative jurisdictions against cases received. Many cases involve multiple jurisdictions so we use 'track' to categorise cases by jurisdiction.
Cases are confined exclusively to 1 of the 3 tracks, because we decide the track by the highest jurisdiction in the case:
- 'fast track' cases mostly relate to monetary issues, such as unpaid wages
- 'standard track' must contain unfair dismissal or a related jurisdiction
- 'open track' cases contain at least 1 discrimination or disclosure-type jurisdiction
- 'no track' is when Acas has not yet identified any relevant jurisdictions

Notes
Due to the effects of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on the employment tribunal service, there are significant delays in employment tribunal cases reaching Acas. The apparent upwards trend is a result of the employment tribunal service returning to business as usual.
It is not possible to be exact about the number of individuals because some people submit more than 1 notification, usually either because they need to name more than 1 respondent or in an attempt to be precise about the respondent's name (legal identity).
Acas uses the date the case is received from the employment tribunal service rather than the date the case was submitted by the claimant.
