Advice and Guidance

Our website has an A-Z library of information for our customers to easily identify the information and guidance they need.

Employers, employees and representatives can download or order booklets, leaflets and handbooks covering a wide range of employment matters on everything from taking holidays and understanding parental rights to tackling discrimination and handling redundancy situations.

The Acas website also provides a self-diagnosis 'The Acas Productivity Tool' to enable employers to understand their organisation's strengths and weaknesses and identify simple practical steps they can take to get the best out of their staff. The tool produces a report with links to relevant Acas guidance and services for the customer to investigate further.

Our website also provides free Useful templates for letters, forms and checklists and signposts our customers to further Acas Publications if they feel additional help is needed.

Training

We offer Training in all aspects of employment relations covering anything affecting the relationship between employers and employees. Our training courses run from every office across the organisation, covering the basics - such as recruitment, contracts of employment, people management, discipline and grievance and absence management.

More advanced training, such as conflict management, mediation, monitoring and impact assessment and addressing work/life balance are also available.

Our training is useful for managers, line managers, supervisors and HR professionals and is designed to provide value for all business types and sizes, whether it's for a small business owner or managers without a dedicated HR department to the larger employer who wants to understand more about the latest updates in employment law, best practice and management thinking.

Bespoke training can also be created specifically to meet our customers needs and can be delivered in their workplace.

Helpline

Helpline Online is a database of frequently asked employment queries and has been developed to help both employees and employers. It is an automated system which is designed to give our customers a straightforward answer to their employment relations questions, it also provides links to further advice and guidance on our website.

If a customer is still experiencing problems in the workplace and wish to talk through their options, an Acas adviser can talk to them about their rights and help them to decide on the next steps available to them.

Last year we handled over one million calls and queries through the Acas Helpline and Helpline Online, and around 86% of callers were able to take clear action based.

Dispute resolution

If someone has a dispute at work and that person or their employer asks for our help, we can work with them to find a solution acceptable to both parties. Anybody planning to lodge a claim with the Employment Tribunal must first notify Acas. Our role is to help both sides reach a mutually acceptable solution, which avoids the potential cost, time and stress of the tribunal system. This service is called Early Conciliation.

If we are unable to help those involved reach a solution, the matter can still go to a Tribunal. We can continue to offer conciliation services right up to the hearing date.

We also provide collective conciliation services to help employers and employees' representatives (Trade Unions) to reach agreement on issues affecting groups of employees, such as pay, and terms and conditions.

We provide Mediation to help organisations resolve conflicts that arise between individuals or within workgroups. We help organisations set up their own mediation schemes and provide their staff with accredited training to become internal mediators.

Leading debates

Using evidence gathered in our work to prevent and resolve conflicts, we are uniquely able to identify new and emerging employment issues. We also commission Research and consult with partners to build and share further insights.

We regularly publish papers and commentaries, and work with policy makers to influence thinking, stimulate debate with The Acas Blog and enhance wider understanding of the challenges and potential solutions on workplace issues.

Our experts and senior team speak at conferences across the country and beyond, offering Acas' view on critical issues in the world of work; and we welcome the leading names in employment relations and the world of work to speak at our events.
