Many micro-businesses miss their online potential

Back in December 2014, Cyber Monday saw shoppers splurging an estimated £720 million in 161 million visits to online retail sites - a 40 per cent rise on sales figures compared to the previous year.

But many small businesses are missing out on the huge potential of e-commerce. A recent survey found that nearly 2 million businesses are not online, and almost two-thirds weren't able to accept online payments.

'Thousands of potential customers are searching online for local small businesses and without an online profile businesses will lose out,' Business and Enterprise Minister Matthew Hancock said.

Do More Online

To address the issue, the Government has set aside £2 million to help microbusinesses and sole traders boost their online presence, part of its Do More Online campaign.

'To make sure consumers get the best deal and small businesses spread their nets far and wide, the government is investing in a range of advice to help them do more online,' Mr Hancock said.

'I am committed to making the UK the best place in the world to start up and grow, and this is integral to achieving that.'
