Get the most from your people, says UKCES
The UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) has published a new brochure as part of its 'Mind your own business' initiative to highlight some simple steps employers can take to get the most from their employees.
Mind Your Own Business: How to get the most from your people warns that only a fifth of employers are implementing policies and practices specifically to get high performance from staff. Almost two-thirds (64 per cent) of employees feel that they aren't being used to their full potential, with their skills and talents being left to languish.
The authors claim that high performing companies put people with the right skills into the right jobs, and do what they can to motivate, involve and keep them engaged - giving employees the right attitudes too. Any one of these components is important, but when the right skills, jobs and attitudes all click into place it 'can pay real dividends'. What binds it all together, they say, is great leadership and management.
High performing businesses, UKCES says, get the best of their people by demonstrating that they 'value them and actively' communicate 'with them to seek their input'. Part of this is showing that there's a willingness to invest in training and by developing learning opportunities through job shadowing, mentoring or coaching. Ensuring that employees have the skills they need for the job, and that the job itself is meeting the needs of the employees and business, makes a virtuous circle for success. The reward, they claim, could be becoming a high performance company that doubles its profit per employee.
