Managing change for academies and free schools
Change can be unsettling for many people; employees may be worried about the changes that becoming an academy will involve, such as:
- will my contract change?
- will I have to work longer hours?
- will I get the same amount of holiday?
Terms and conditions should transfer over when there is a TUPE transfer. By managing the change from local authority school to academy effectively, school leaders can ensure that schools benefit from staff who feel engaged and motivated by the change.
Effective communication and consultation between school leaders and staff is essential to manage change successfully. School leaders may want to communicate directly with staff, they may need to go through the unions or they may decide that they want to set up an employee forum. Keeping everyone involved and informed will ensure that school leaders and members of staff achieve the best outcome for their school, themselves and their pupils.
