Promotion to supervisor is usually just cause for celebration, but for those with little prior experience the prospect can be daunting. Just what does it take to be a good supervisor?

Good supervisors are the key to the running of a successful team in any workplace. They are a crucial link in the management chain, responsible for inspiring those that they line manage and driving forward performance.

Supervisors need to have a broad set of skills. On top of excellent organisational and communication skills, a good supervisor must be able to recognise and nurture the individual skills of the members of their team, as well as identifying areas for development. They need to be able to engage and motivate their team and encourage new ideas, in addition to managing grievance and disciplinary issues.

Not everyone is a born supervisor or manager, and many people find themselves promoted to a supervisory role with little or no experience. While they may have many years of operational experience within a particular company or organisation, promotion to supervisor can be daunting and mean learning a whole new set of skills. It can also mean fundamental changes in your working relationships with colleagues and management.
