Mediation
Mediation is an informal way of resolving disagreements or disputes in the workplace. It can avoid the need to use more formal or legal procedures. It involves a neutral third person working with those in dispute to help them reach an agreement and is a confidential and voluntary process. At Acas we have an excellent track record in helping to resolve disputes. Our services are quality assured through customer satisfaction research carried out by third parties. We also believe in helping employers and employees manage conflict themselves through our mediation and conflict management training. We can provide mediation or training at times and locations to suit you. Acas mediation servicesWe can provide an independent mediator to help resolve your disputes. This works best if we are brought in at an early stage, when conflict has arisen but before relationships have broken down. Our experience shows that mediation is particularly useful for conflict or disputes between individual workers or between individuals and their line managers. Where conflict has resulted in an individual's absence from work, mediation can also help them integrate back into the workplace. See our case study: Acas mediation trainingWe can also help you develop your own workplace mediation scheme, with guidance on how to integrate mediation into your organisation. This can include training and accrediting your own workplace mediators, with successful candidates gaining our accredited Certificate in Internal Workplace Mediation (CIWM). Acas mediation filmWe've created a short film to give you an idea of what mediation can look and feel like. Each mediation is different but this film is based on a real-life case: it features one of our own mediators, with actors in the other roles.
