Why should I try conciliation?
You can get a better understanding of the issues and the strengths and weaknesses of your case. You might be able to settle the dispute without going to tribunal, avoiding the time, expense and stress of going to a hearing. In addition, tribunal hearings are public, whereas conciliation can be kept confidential. Any settlement will be on terms agreed by you, not imposed by a tribunal, and it can include things which a tribunal does not have the power to award, such as an employment reference. About three quarters of claims made to employment tribunals are resolved through Acas conciliation.
